I read this article about odious debt which is an idea that a lender ought to forgive certain debts of poor countries on the grounds that the loans ought not to have been given in the first place. An example is given of a nuclear power plant in the Philippines that was built on earthquake prone ground.
This is a good idea and would encourage corporations to behave responsibly. I think this idea could even be extended to certain personal debts. Of course I don’t think people should be able to run up bills and not pay with impunity, but there are certainly cases where lenders are irresponsible, immoral or both; and the concept of odious debt would help remedy this.
